Grammar school preparation costs: How much does gymnasium preparation cost?

To be able to transfer to the Gymnasium in the canton of Zurich, students should complete a grammar school preparation course. But how high are the Gymnasium preparation costs? And what does the preparation for high school include?

How high are the grammar school preparation costs?

For grammar school preparation you count various offers, including the so-called gymnasium preparation courses, early courses, preliminary courses, supplementary courses, holiday intensive courses, essay training courses, online essay corrections and exam simulations.

We have calculated the costs for the gymnasium preparation based on the prices of the tutoring institute Lern-Forum and subsequently compiled.

 

Gymnasium preparation course costs

The gymnasium preparation courses differ. On the one hand, you can look at whether these are to prepare for the gymnasium examination for the long-term grammar school or for the short-term grammar school whether it is face-to-face courses in the premises of the course provider or online courses and whether the courses include group lessons or private lessons. As a special form, there is also the self-study preparation for the gymnasium with learning tests (so-called milestone courses).

The Costs for these gymnasium preparation courses depend, among other things, on which duration the respective gymnasium preparation course has.

In the following overview we have the price ranges of the various types of gymnasium courses listed:

 

  • Gymnasium preparation for long-term grammar school examination (group lessons, face-to-face courses or online courses): 1980-2980 CHF
  • Gymnasium preparation for the short-term grammar school exam (group lessons, face-to-face courses or online courses): 2080-3140 CHF
  • Self-study preparation for gymnasium (group lessons, milestone courses for long or short gymnasium): 1690 CHF

Early course from 4th grade - costs

The early courses are preparatory courses for the gymnasium preparation starting from the 4th primary class. These early preparatory courses from 4th grade serve in particular to improve school grades in German and mathematics, so that the preliminary grades for the gymnasium examination are as good as possible. These preliminary grades count for 50 percent of the overall grade of the central entrance examination to the long-term grammar school (ZAP) in the canton of Zurich.

Both early courses accompanying school and early courses during the holidays are offered. The costs for the school-based early courses vary depending on the course duration.

  • Early school courses from 4th grade accompanying school: 1710-1920 CHF
  • Early courses from 4th grade during the holidays: 980 CHF

5th grade preliminary course - costs

The preliminary courses from 5th grade basically follow the early preparatory courses of the 4th grade and, like these, serve in particular to improve school grades in German and mathematics in order to achieve the best possible preliminary grades for the gymnasium examination.

Both preliminary courses accompanying school as well as preliminary courses during the holidays are offered. For preliminary courses offered alongside school, the costs vary depending on the course duration.

  • Preliminary courses accompanying school from 5th grade: 1880-2740 CHF
  • Preliminary courses during the holidays from 5th grade: 980 CHF

1st secondary class preliminary course - costs

The preliminary courses from the 1st secondary class are particularly designed to improve school grades in the subjects of mathematics, German, English and French, in order to achieve as good preliminary grades as possible for the gymnasium entrance examination.

Both preliminary courses accompanying school as well as preliminary courses during the holidays are offered, whereby in the holiday courses only mathematics, German and French is taught, while in the preliminary courses accompanying school English is taught as well. The costs of the preliminary courses accompanying school vary depending on the course duration.

  • Preliminary courses accompanying school from the 1st secondary school year: 1880-2740 CHF
  • Preliminary courses during the holidays from the 1st secondary school year: 980 CHF

Supplementary course costs

In addition to the preliminary courses from the 1st secondary school class, there are also supplementary courses in French and English, which are designed for students who still need additional support. Some of these supplementary courses begin as early as the first year of secondary school and are held primarily during the school holidays.

Holiday courses (intensive courses) costs

Holiday courses for gymnasium preparation - or intensive courses during the holidays - are held in different types - for example as preliminary courses from 4th grade, foundation course for long grammar school from the end of 5th grade, foundation course for short grammar school from the end of 1st secondary school class, as basic course for long or short grammar school, as crash course for long or short gymnasium or as an exam course for long-term or short-term grammar schools. Since the holiday courses are exclusively essay training, separate essay training courses are offered during the holidays.

The costs for the holiday courses vary between 780-1880 CHF, depending on which course it is and how long it lasts.

Essay training courses costs

The essay training courses are offered as school-accompanying courses on Saturdays and as holiday courses. Costs for essay training courses move between 780 and 840 CHF.

Online essay correction costs

Those who simply want to practise writing essays can use the online essay correction service. After registration, you simply choose an essay topic, write the essay and then upload it for correction in the essay tool. Within 7 days, you will receive the corrected essay back, along with a comprehensive written report containing an error analysis and concrete suggestions for improvement.

The cost for the essay correction is CHF 84 per essay. However, you can also choose a subscription for 4 essays and pay CHF 305 for 4 essays.

Exam simulation costs

Students are also given the opportunity to participate in simulations of the gymnasium examination on three different dates, so to three trial tests. Ideally, students should take advantage of the opportunity to participate in all three simulation exams, as students typically improve with each subsequent simulation exam.

The participation in simulation tests is therefore in itself a very good preparation for high school and takes away the students' fear of the real exam, which allows them to concentrate better on the exam tasks in the real gymnasium exam.

The costs for participating in an exam simulation for gymnasium preparation depend on whether you are a student of the Lern-Forum or an external student:

 

  • Simulation exam for long-term or short-term grammar school for Lern-Forum students: 280 CHF
  • Simulation exam for long-term or short-term grammar school for external students: 295 CHF

Conclusion on the costs of preparing for high school

If you start your preparation for the gymnasium early, i.e. as recommended with the early courses from the 4th primary class, if you want to transfer to the long-term gymnasium, or with the preparatory courses from the 1st secondary class, if you want to transfer to the short-term gymnasium, and if you then take part in the gymnasium preparation courses accompanying school (including essay training) and also in one or more intensive holiday courses and visit the simulation test, the total cost of the gymnasium preparation will usually add up to between CHF 5,000 and CHF 10,000.
