Apprenticeship aptitude test: What tests are available?

Apprenticeship aptitude test: There is not just one, but a variety of different aptitude tests to determine whether you are suitable for an apprenticeship or a specific apprenticeship.

A distinction is made between job-neutral aptitude tests, aptitude tests for specific occupational fields, aptitude tests for specific occupations/apprenticeships, and in-house aptitude tests. In the following, we will take a closer look at the various tests.

Career-neutral aptitude tests apprenticeship

There are various career-neutral aptitude tests for apprenticeships in Switzerland, which are conducted by different providers. These include the Basic Check, the Berufs-Check from Yousty.ch, and the Stellwerktest, which we will discuss in more detail below.

Basic Check

The Basic Check is an aptitude test designed to determine whether the examinee has the basic school skills required to begin an apprenticeship. The test is aimed at students who have completed the 8th grade, as it is based on the curriculum at the end of the 8th grade (HarmoS 10). It tests language skills, math skills, and basic cognitive abilities.

The Basic Check is administered by GATEWAY Solutions AG.

In principle, the Basic Check is a career-neutral aptitude test, as the basic version does not refer to a specific occupational field or profession. However, additional modules can be selected that aim to test aptitude for occupations in specific occupational fields, such as foreign language modules for testing aptitude for administrative and/or EFZ occupations involving customer contact. For manual EFZ occupations and many EBA occupations, on the other hand, practical tasks are particularly important.

After the Basic Check, you can then use GATEWAY's matching tool to compare the results from the Basic Check with the respective requirements of specific occupations to check whether you are suitable for the specific occupation.

Berufs-Check from Yousty.ch

The vocational training portal Yousty.ch has also developed its own career check called Berufs-Check as an aptitude test for apprenticeships, but this is only intended for pupils who are at the end of the second year of secondary school.

The Yousty Berufs-Check allows you to compare your academic and intellectual abilities with the requirements of your desired career.

First, questions about your interests are asked. Then your intellectual and academic abilities are tested. Finally, you can enter your desired profession in the matching tool and see how well you are suited to that profession. You can also generate a results sheet for your desired professions, which you can attach to any applications as a PDF file.

Stellwerktest

The Stellwerktest is used to assess pupils' skills in mathematics, German, French, English and science and technology (physics, chemistry and biology). The test can be used in the 7th, 8th or 9th year of school. If pupils take the test in all three years, it is possible to identify any development in their skills.

The Stellwerk test system is developed and supervised by Lehrmittelverlag St.Gallen.

Once you have your Stellwerk profile, you can compare it with the profile requirements of various apprenticeships to find out which apprenticeship suits you best. In this respect, the Stellwerktest is also an aptitude test for apprenticeships.

Aptitude tests for specific occupational fields

Another category of aptitude tests are aptitude tests for specific occupational fields.

Multicheck

The Multicheck is an aptitude test designed to determine whether someone is suited to a particular occupational field or an EBA profession. But essentially, it is also an aptitude test for apprenticeships. There are nine different Multicheck tests in total, eight of which differ in terms of specific occupational fields, while one relates to EBA professions in general.

Please also read our article "For which professions is the Multicheck required, and which one?".

In addition to school knowledge (school curriculum at the end of Year 8, HarmoS 10), the Multicheck test also assesses logical thinking, imagination, concentration and memory skills.

Like the Basic Check, the Multicheck is carried out by GATEWAY Solutions AG

Kompass

The Kompass test is an aptitude test for a specific occupational field, which you select before taking the test. It assesses your general knowledge, language skills, intellectual potential, learning, working and social behaviour, and professional interests.

The Kompass test is offered by Nantys AG.

Aptitude tests for specific occupations/apprenticeships

There are also aptitude tests for certain professions, which are conducted by professional associations, for example. But here, too, the focus is actually on an aptitude test for apprenticeships, which precede the actual practice of the profession. The career checks offered by Berufsberatung.ch also fall into this category, as they can be used to assess whether you are suited to a particular profession.

Aptitude tests from professional associations

The following aptitude tests are offered by professional associations, among others:

  • AGVS aptitude test from the Swiss Automotive Industry Association AGVS, for example for automotive assistant EBA, automotive specialist EFZ, automotive mechatronics technician EFZ, bicycle mechanic EFZ

  • VSGU aptitude assessment by the VSGU (Swiss Association of Goldsmiths and Watchmakers) for goldsmiths EFZ, silversmiths EFZ, gemstone setters EFZ

  • TechXperience aptitude test from Swissmechanic (trade association for SMEs in the Swiss mechanical, electrical and metalworking industry) for polymechanics EFZ, production mechanics EFZ, mechanics practitioners EBA, automation engineers EFZ, automation fitters EFZ

Career checks from Berufsberatung.ch

The vocational training portal Berufsberatung.ch offers around 170 different career checks for the most common EFZ and EBA apprenticeships.

For each profession, you have to answer 12 questions. The evaluation of your answers helps to determine whether you are suited to the specific profession.

In-house company aptitude tests

Finally, there are also in-house aptitude tests, i.e. aptitude tests that certain companies have developed themselves in order to find suitable apprentices.
