New Aargau cantonal school in Stein starts in August 2025

The new Aargau cantonal school Stein in the municipality of Stein in Fricktal will start school operations for the 2025/2026 school year on 11 August 2025, albeit initially in a temporary building on the grounds of the Brotkorb school complex (Stein).

Existing cantonal schools in Aargau

In the canton of Aargau, there are six grammar schools (Gymnasium) at the beginning of 2025, which are located at the so-called cantonal schools in Aargau, namely at the following locations:

New cantonal school Stein

In addition to the existing cantonal schools in the canton of Aargau, new cantonal schools are planned, with the Fricktal secondary school in Stein being the first of these new cantonal schools in Aargau to be completed. Construction work on the actual new cantonal school in Stein will not begin until 2026 and the new school building is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in 2029.

However, a temporary building for the Stein cantonal school has already been under construction since 2024, in which the Stein cantonal school will then begin operations on 11 August 2025 for four school years: 2025/2026, 2026/2027, 2027/2028 and 2028/2029. After that, the move to the permanent new building for the Stein cantonal school will take place, i.e. for the 2029/2030 school year.

The provisional secondary school for the Fricktal Kanti is necessary - it is therefore not possible to wait until 2029 for the final new Kanti building - because Fricktal pupils will no longer be able to attend the Gymnasium or Secondary technical school (FMS) in the canton of Basel-Landschaft in the 2025/2026 school year. However, pupils from Fricktal can continue to attend the Secondary business school (WMS) and the Computer science secondary school (IMS) at the respective locations in Aargau, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft (WMS only) and in the canton of Basel-Stadt.

A three-storey temporary building consisting of 154 modules will be erected on the site of the Brotkorb school complex on the corner of Schulstrasse and Münchwilerstrasse in the municipality of Stein for the temporary cantonal school in Stein. This means that the temporary modular building is only a few hundred metres away from the site in the Neumatt Ost area on which the permanent Kanti Stein is being built, opposite the property at Münchwilerstrasse 22. Although the temporary solution is being built at Münchwilerstrasse 6, the official address of the temporary solution is Brotkorbstrasse 11 in 4332 Stein.

Programme in the provisional secondary school

The Fricktal temporary secondary school in Stein is due to open on 11 August 2025 with four sections of the first year at the Gymnasium and two sections of the Secondary technical school (FMS). A department at the cantonal school is what is known colloquially as a class.

The provisional secondary school in Stein will not offer all the specialisations of a grammar school in Aargau. There will also be cutbacks in the number of vocational subjects at the FMS at the location of the temporary solution. However, thanks to cooperation with secondary schools in the canton of Basel-Stadt and other secondary schools in Aargau, pupils in Fricktal will have access to all grammar school specialisations and all FMS vocational fields.

The following three vocational fields are offered as part of the vocational middle school at the provisional cantonal school in Stein:

Education
Health/science
Social work

The following specialisation groups are offered as part of the Gymnasium of the provisional secondary school Stein:

Modern languages
NAWIMAT (natural sciences with maths)
Humanities and social sciences

The following specialisation subjects are offered at the cantonal school Stein provisorium:

Biology and Chemistry
Physics and Applied Mathematics
Spanish
Economics and Law
Education/Psychology/Philosophy

It will also be possible to attend an immersion course in English at the provisional Kanti Stein.

Initially, around 150 pupils will be able to attend the provisional secondary school, with the number of pupils increasing with each school year, as the school will grow by 6 departments each year.

Due to the limited capacity of the temporary school in Stein, it is not possible to admit all Fricktal Kanti students to the temporary Kanti Stein. However, those who cannot be admitted to the provisional cantonal school in Stein still have the option of attending other secondary schools in Aargau. As with all other cantonal schools in Aargau, the freedom of choice with regard to the cantonal school Stein is also limited in that it cannot be guaranteed that a student will be accepted at the Kanti Stein if this is chosen by the student as their preferred location.

Certain offers from Basel-Stadt secondary schools will also remain available for Fricktal pupils, although these places are limited for pupils from Aargau and access to a grammar school in the canton of Basel-Stadt is not guaranteed.

Programme in the new Kanti Stein building

The new Stein cantonal school building with space for 44 departments should be ready for occupancy in 2029. It will then be possible to offer all specialised subjects in this new Kanti Stein building, i.e. from the 2029/2030 school year.

When the new building of the Stein cantonal school opens, there will be enough room capacity to accommodate all Fricktal pupils who have made it to grammar school or specialised secondary school. Pupils from Fricktal who have not yet graduated from a Basel secondary school in 2029 when Kanti Stein opens in the new school building will be able to complete their education at the respective Basel secondary school without having to change schools.

As soon as the Stein cantonal school commences operations in the final new building in the 2029/2030 school year, the modular temporary building on the Brotkorb school site will be dismantled, with the dismantled modules remaining the property of the Canton of Aargau. These modules will then be used at other locations.

Other planned cantonal schools in Aargau

In addition to the new cantonal school in the municipality of Stein in Fricktal, two further cantonal schools are being planned in Aargau. Firstly, a new cantonal school is to be built in Lenzburg and secondly, a new cantonal school in Windisch.

One of these two new cantonal schools - either the Kanti Lenzburg or the Kanti Windisch - is due to open in 2035, the other in 2040.

In addition, the capacities of the Alte Kantonsschule Aarau and the Kantonsschule Wohlen are to be expanded.
