
Grammar school exam results 2025 in canton Zurich (ZAP results 2025)
The canton of Zurich has now finally announced how many students passed the grammar school exam (Gymi exam) in 2025, as the results of the Gymi exam 2025 were published in mid-May 2025. The results show that the transfer rate for the long grammar school in the canton of Zurich will remain constant this year at around 15 per cent.
In addition to the results of the central entrance exam (ZAP) for the long-term grammar school and short-term grammar school in Zurich, the other ZAP results were also published, i.e. the results of the FMS, HMS, IMS and BMS exams, as well as the rate of how many students pass the Gymnasium trial period in the canton of Zurich.

Grammar school exam 2025 results: How many have passed the Gymi exam
Once again in 2025, the Canton of Zurich's Department of Education published the grammar school exam results (Gymi exam results) for the canton of Zurich in mid-May. And once again this year, significantly more primary school pupils pass the 2025 Gymi exam for the long-term Gymnasium than pupils in the 2nd or 3rd secondary school class pass the Gymi exam for the short-term Gymnasium.
In the following overview, we have listed the grammar school exam 2025 results separately for the long-term grammar school examinees and the short-term grammar school examinees:
- Results grammar school exam 2025 for the long-term Gymnasium: of 4,562 candidates, 2,443 passed, i.e. 53.6 %
- Results grammar school exam 2025 for the short-term Gymnasium from the 2nd secondary level: of 2,468 candidates, 939 passed, i.e. 38 %
- Results grammar school exam 2025 for the short-term Gymnasium from the 3rd secondary level: of 1,665 candidates, 753 passed, i.e. 45.2 %
A total of 8,695 candidates took part in the 2025 Gymi exam in the canton of Zurich, of which 4,135 passed, meaning that the overall pass rate in 2025 was 47.56 per cent. In the previous year, it was 47.49 per cent.
In relation to the total number of pupils from the sixth primary class, 14.9 per cent now have the opportunity to transfer to the long-term grammar school. In the previous year, this figure was 14.8 per cent, which means that it is still justified to speak of an ‘unofficial rate’ here, as this transfer rate to the long grammar school in the canton of Zurich has remained stable at around 15 per cent for years.
While 8,453 candidates sat the Zurich Gymi exam in 2024, there were 242 more candidates in 2025 with 8,695 candidates.

Success rates for HMS, IMS, FMS and BMS (ZAP results 2025)
As part of the central entrance examination (ZAP) of the Canton of Zurich, not only the long-term grammar school and short-term grammar school examinations are conducted, but also the entrance examinations for other cantonal Matura schools, for which the ZAP results were also published:
- ZAP results for commercial secondary schools (HMS) from the 2nd secondary level: 507 of 1,085 candidates passed, i.e. 46.7 %
- ZAP results for commercial secondary schools (HMS) from the 3rd secondary level: 677 of 1,225 candidates passed, i.e. 55.3 %
- ZAP results for computer science secondary schools (IMS) from the 3rd secondary level: out of 198 candidates, 88 passed, i.e. 44.4 %
- ZAP results for Secondary technical school (FMS) from secondary level 3: out of 1,199 candidates, 678 passed, i.e. 56.5 %
- ZAP results for Vocational baccalaureate school (BM1): out of 2,046 candidates, 1,518 passed, i.e. 74.2 %
- ZAP results for Vocational baccalaureate school (BM2): out of 825 candidates, 351 passed, i.e. 42.5 %
The overall success rate of the 6,050 candidates, of which 3,819 passed the 2025 central entrance examination for HMS, IMS, FMS and BMS in the canton of Zurich, was 63.12 per cent.
Gymnasium trial period quota (2024/2025 results)
The figures for passing the probationary period at grammar schools in the canton of Zurich were also announced by the Zurich Department of Education.
At the long grammar school, the Gymi probationary period pass rate was 92.8 per cent, which means that the proportion of students who were allowed to remain in the grammar school in the 2024/2025 school year is slightly higher than in the 2023/2024 school year, when the retention rate was 92 per cent.

In the 2024/2025 school year, proportionally more students passed the probationary period at Zurich's short grammar school than in the previous year. While the pass rate in 2023/2024 was 88.3 per cent, in 2024/2025 a full 89 per cent were allowed to remain in the Kurzgymi after the probationary period.

Conclusion on the ZAP results 2025
In the entire 2024/2025 school year, 15,273 entrance examinations were taken for one of the baccalaureate schools in the canton of Zurich, i.e. for grammar schools, HMS, IMS, FMS and BMS. In the previous year, there were 14,761 examinations, in 2022/2023 there were 14,192. The Canton of Zurich's Department of Education continues to assume that the growth in the population is responsible for the increase in the number of examinations.
The calculation of the pass rate in relation to the total ZAP results shows the following: Of the 15,273 entrance examinations in 2024/2025, 7,954 were passed, resulting in a pass rate of 52.08 per cent in relation to all ZAP examinations. The overall ZAP result is relatively stable over the years, as it was 50.02 per cent in 2023/2024 and 52.02 per cent in 2022/2023.
