The 3rd year of Bezirksschule is an important crossroads for a student's career future. Students usually try to attend the highest school level - Kantonsschule or BMS. There, they receive a broad education with a focus on key skills in languages and maths.
We prepare students optimally for this transition. The changes to the entrance requirements mean that school marks are the decisive factor. There is no longer a final exam for Bezirksschule. It is crucial to achieve high marks during the 3rd year of Bez.
No entrance exam in the final year
The transition from Bezirksschule to Gymnasium, a middle school or vocational school (with vocational Matura) is determined solely by school marks in the interim or final report for the 3rd year of Bezirksschule. Those who do not achieve the required marks to enter without an exam (4.7 for Gymnasium, 4.4 for specialised, business, IT school and vocational school) can take an entrance exam for the desired school. The entrance exams for Gymnasium, specialised, business and IT school cannot be taken in the final year of Bezirksschule. Students must wait a year after completion. This means students who fail to achieve the necessary marks to enter these schools have a forced one-year waiting period. This is why it is so important to prepare in advance!

Transitioning from the 3rd year of Bezirksschule - a brief overview
The requirements for entering the various Aargau middle schools changed in 2016/2017.
Average marks of 4.7 after the 1st semester of the 3rd year of Bez.
provisional acceptance to Gymnasium (half-year probation)
Average marks of 4.7 for the entire 3rd year of Bez.
definite acceptance to Gymnasium (no probation)
Average marks of 4.4 after the 1st semester of the 3rd year of Bez.
provisional acceptance to specialised, business or IT school (half-year probation), definite acceptance to vocational school
Average marks of 4.4 for the entire 3rd year of Bez.
definite acceptance to specialised, business, IT or vocational school (no probation)
Averages of at least 4.0 in maths and German are required in interim/final reports. These two subjects count double for the calculation of the required average.
Entrance exams for Gymnasium, specialised, business and IT school can only be taken in the following year after completing Bezirksschule (1-year waiting period for Bezirksschule students who do not achieve the required marks).
The direct way to Gymnasium
Since the 2016/2017 school year, the Bezirksschule final exam (BAP) no longer exists. The transition to Gymnasium (and also other middle schools) is not based solely on school marks from the final year of Bezirksschule.
- Students in their final year of Bezirksschule who have achieved an average of at least 4.7 may enter Gymnasiumwithout an entrance exam. Those who reach a 4.7 average in their interim report may enter Gymnasium provisionally (with one semester of probation). Those who achieve an average of 4.7 on their yearly report may enter Gymnasium without probation.
- Students in their final year at Bezirksschule who have achieved an average of at least 4.4 may enter specialised, business, IT or vocational school without an exam. Those who reach a 4.4 average in their interim report may enter specialised, business, or IT school provisionally (with a probationary period of one semester). Those who achieve an average of 4.4 on their yearly report may enter their desired middle school without probation. In both cases (4.4 average in interim or yearly report), students may enter vocational school without probation.
- Under the new system, students must demonstrate acceptable marks (4.0) in maths and German on their interim/yearly report in order to enter Gymnasium, vocational school or any of the middle schools without an entrance exam. Additionally, these two subjects count double in the calculation of the average used to determine eligibility. Deficiencies in German and maths cannot be so easily compensated by good marks in other subjects.
- The following subjects are relevant for determining eligibility to enter without an exam: maths, German, French, English, history, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, art/music/PE. The core subjects German and maths count double, and at least a 4.0 is required in each. For the subject group art/music/PE, the two subjects with the highest marks are counted once each.
- Enduring knowledge is more of a focus than ever in the new eligibility process. Students cannot and should not rely on short-term cramming for an entrance exam; instead, they must demonstrate consistent good performance. This is what prepares them for the demanding environment of a Gymnasium or middle school.
It is therefore a good idea to prepare in advance for the transition to higher schools. Consistent good marks, particularly in maths and German, are key if you wish to attend Gymnasium. Lern-Forum has your back in this time of new challenges.
