Admission Requirements of Canton Schools ZH

Long-track Gymnasium

The entrance exam consists of several parts:

  1. Composing a text (60 minutes)
  2. Text and speech comprehension (45 minutes)
  3. Mathematics (arithmetic, 60 minutes)

If overall school marks are factored into the admission decision, then students have passed the entrance exam as long as they have an average of 4.5. To determine the average, the following grades are all weighted equally:

  1. Incoming marks(=overall school marks) "German"
  2. Incoming marks(=overall school marks) "Mathematics"
  3. Exam result "German"
(1/2 composing a text, 1/2 text and speech comprehension)
  4. Exam result "Mathematics"

Oral entrance exams are no longer required.

Exam result = average between the incoming marks and exam score
Exam result ≥ 4.5: admission
Exam result < 4.5: rejection

Exam requirements for private school (without incoming marks):
Exam result = exam grade
Exam result ≥ 4.00: admission
Exam result < 4.00: rejection

Gymnasium entrance exam date: 10th/11th March 2020

Changes to the entrance exams for Gymnasium in Zurich

Why is the exam so difficult?

The rigorous entrance policies for each school level are based partly on historical structures.

The decision to make entry into Gymnasium dependent on a difficult exam is based on both political and financial concerns. The prestigious university route of education eats up a lot of tax money, and this money is not to be "wasted" on students who lack exceptional motivation.

The exam requires advanced thinking in various areas:

Through regular practice, students become familiar with the requirements placed on them by the exam and are encouraged to trust themselves and work methodically.

Students who learn quickly require fewer similar exercises in order to understand a concept.

Our prep courses are designed to help average children understand and pass the exam.

Rigorous Gymnasium Prep Courses

Entrance exam to long-track Gymnasium (after the 6th year of primary school)

In groups of 3 to 8 students, we systematically review and solidify material with a wide variety of exercises (excellent review problems with solutions). Then we solve and explain previous entrance exams in detail so that students can recognize typical exam questions. Homework is an integral part of the course. All courses are last until the end of February / beginning of March 2020.

Course structure

While preparing for the entrance exam, students also learn to work efficiently and solve problems on their own.

Specific essay practice

  • 4 essays (18-day course)
  • 3 essays (16-day course)
  • 2 essays (14-day course)
  • 1 essay (10-day course)

We discuss the structure and content of each essay and correct it carefully. At the beginning of the course, students write several essays. The later part of the course is focused on solving exam problems.

The primary students are getting a new maths book. We are always paying attention to current developments in the curriculum, and we adjust our courses accordingly.
